Scope Of Credential

(What will I be able to teach when I earn the credential?)
The California Single Subject Credential qualifies you to teach in California public and private schools. Single Subject Teaching Credentials authorize the holder to teach the specific subject(s) named on the credential in departmentalized classes such as those in most middle schools and high schools. However, a teacher authorized for single subject instruction is qualified to teach any subject in his or her authorized field at any grade level-- preschool, grades K-12, or in classes organized primarily for adults.

Credential Requirements

To earn a secondary science teaching credential, candidates must
  • demonstrate subject matter competency and
  • complete a program of professional preparation.

The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing authorizes eight different science credentials for teaching in grades 7-12. Each credential requires demonstration of subject matter competence through completion of specific undergraduate or graduate degrees OR successful passage of several subtests of the California Science Examination for Teachers (CSET) in Science. Candidates with a regular credential in a science area are authorized to teach in their specific discipline as well as general and integrated science, including middle school science. Candidates with a Specialized credential in a science area are authorized to teach only in their specific discipline. The most common route to subject matter competency is a major in a specific discipline and passage of the appropriate CSET's. A newly proposed Foundational Level General Science credential will qualifies the candidate to teach general and natural science. This credential should be available by August 2009.

Establishing Subject Matter Competency

You may establish Subject Matter Competency in one of three ways. Your method will also determine what you are qualified to teach.

Method of Establishing Subject Matter Competency

Qualifies You to Teach

1

Completion of a Subject Matter Preparation Program in Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Physics, or Geology.  These programs require specific coursework as outlined on the link.

SCIENCE: Chemistry
SCIENCE: Biological Sciences
SCIENCE: Geosciences
SCIENCE: Physics

2

Completion of a post-baccalaureate degree from a regionally-accredited institution in the requested area, or in a closely related area deemed equivalent by the Commission; or completion of a baccalaureate degree and 30 semester-units or 45 quarter-units of postgraduate coursework in the science area requested, or in a closely related area deemed equivalent by the Commission.  For additional information, see Coded Correspondence 03-0100 Addition of Single Subject Teaching Credentials in Foundational-Level Mathematics and in Science (Specialized).

3

Successful passage of the appropriate California Subject Examination for Teachers in that content area. See the List of Required Examinations (PDF) for additional information.

What you may teach depends on the specific tests successfully passed.  See below for a list of tests and areas.
